What We Believe
"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most
important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer
Core Beliefs
The following are the core beliefs of Crossways Community Church based on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.
We believe there is one eternally existing God who has three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is the creator of all that exists, both visible and invisible, and is therefore worthy of all glory and praise. God is perfect in love, power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom, justice, and mercy. He is unchangeable and therefore is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Romans 1:7; Hebrews 1:8; Acts 5:3,4
We affirm that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man—the eternal Son of God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin, lived a life without sin, and revealed the Father through His works and miracles. Through His sacrificial death on the cross, Jesus took our place, paying the price for sin once and for all. He rose bodily from the grave, ascended into heaven, and now reigns at the right hand of the Father.
Jesus gave His life as a ransom for all people. Redemption from sin is found only through His shed blood, and through His suffering and wounds we receive healing and restoration.
John 1:1–3, 18; Titus 2:13; Matthew 20:28; 1 Peter 1:18–19; 1 Timothy 1:15; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13–14; 1 Timothy 2:6; 1 Peter 3:18; 1 Peter 2:24
We believe that God created humanity in His own image, creating them male and female. We affirm the sanctity of marriage as a covenant established by God between one man and one woman, as determined biologically at birth.
Through disobedience, humanity fell into sin, bringing both spiritual and physical death into the world. As a result, all people inherit a sinful nature, and those who reach moral responsibility are subject to personal acts of sin. Humanity is therefore fallen, separated from God, and no longer in original righteousness.
Genesis 1:26–28; Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:9–10, 22–23; Ephesians 2:1–3; 1 John 3:8–10
We believe that salvation is a gift of God’s grace, freely given and fully accomplished through the finished work of Jesus Christ. Nothing can be added to His work to obtain salvation. It is received by grace through faith alone.
Galatians 3:26; Ephesians 2:8–9
We believe the true Church is made up of all those individuals who have put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour. Only the transforming work of the Holy Spirit in the heart of the repentant sinner qualifies a person for membership in the true body of Christ.
Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 2:18-22; Hebrews 12:23
We believe that the Holy Scriptures, both the Old and New Testament, are divinely inspired and constitute God’s revelation to humanity. They are infallible and authoritative, providing the final rule for faith, belief, and conduct.
2 Timothy 3:16–17; Romans 10:17
We believe that the devil is a real, personal being and the true enemy of Christians. Scripture presents him as a deceiver and adversary who actively opposes the purposes of God and the people of God. The Bible consistently uses personal names and personal pronouns in reference to him, affirming his existence and activity rather than portraying him as a mere force or symbol.
Luke 4:1–3; John 8:44; Acts 10:38; 1 John 3:8; Ephesians 6:10–12; 1 Peter 5:8
We believe the Scriptures teach that without holiness no one will see the Lord. We affirm the doctrine of sanctification as a definite yet progressive work of God’s grace, beginning at the moment of new birth and continuing throughout the believer’s life until the rapture of the Church, when we will receive glorified bodies.
Sanctification involves separation from sin and dedication unto God, as the believer is continually transformed into Christlikeness through the work of the Holy Spirit.
Hebrews 12:14; 1 Corinthians 6:11; Hebrews 10:10–14; 2 Peter 3:18; 2 Corinthians 3:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 1 Thessalonians 3:13; 1 John 3:2
We believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, by which believers are empowered and equipped for Christian life and service, accompanied by the supernatural gifts of the Spirit. This experience is distinct from and subsequent to the new birth and enables believers to live and minister with spiritual power.
The baptism in the Holy Spirit is evidenced by the initial physical sign of speaking in other tongues, as the Spirit of God gives utterance.
Mark 16:17; Acts 1:8; Acts 2:4, 38–39; Acts 8:14–17; Acts 10:44–46; Acts 19:1–6
We believe that water baptism is by full immersion and is a direct command of our Lord Jesus Christ, intended for believers only. Baptism is an outward expression of an inward transformation and serves as a public declaration of faith.
Water baptism symbolises the believer’s identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection, and stands as an open confession of their new life and faith in Him.
